Functional Ingredients

The Sirius effect:

Here at Sirius, we use our chemical knowledge to help you make formulations that are safe for use in Personal Care products. The functional ingredients in detergents, cleaners, and personal care products are often the same, but personal care products have additional roles to fill. Just being a great cleaner is not enough: a product has to clean, feel good, be gentle on the skin, smell nice, etc. Several of Sirius’s raw materials are gentle enough to use in personal care products—and more are on their way.

"Human- and environmentally friendlier cosmetics"

Personal Care products use surfactants and emulsifiers –often the same ones as those used to clean bathrooms and wash dishes. The formulation is different though: personal care products contain additional ingredients for enhancing enjoyment, but the functional ingredients (e.g. SLES, SLS) are often the same. These surfactants play a similar role lifting oils and dirt off the skin. While emulsifiers are used to combine the water-soluble ingredients with the oils, both of which are needed to moisturize and nourish the skin and hair.

Personal Care is a huge market, worth around $29 billion in Europe, and more if you consider the indirect ways the economy is affected. This include a wide range of products for beautification and hygiene, such as soaps and shampoos.

Consumers are becoming much more conscious about the type of products they use on their skin and scalp. The interest in sustainable and skin friendly ingredients is not only limited to the younger generations. One particular movement is here to stay: the increased use of mineral, natural or plant-based and biodegradable ingredients.

Sirius offers a range of such products that are suitable for use in Personal Care. Several of Sirius’s 100% bio-based Ethoxybrite surfactants are gentle enough to be used on the skin. Our Ethoxybrite EFA, SLES, and PEG are all sustainable and biodegradable.  Britecream is a range of sustainably produced emulsifiers.

In terms of active ingredients, we offer Britase Bromelain and Britase Papain; enzymes that can be used for gentle, natural exfoliation. Finally, all cosmetic products need some kind of preservative to keep molds and pathogenic bacteria from colonizing the product.

Using plant-based ingredients can help a product attain COSMOS certification, which makes it easier for consumers to choose your product. This certification sets even higher standards for natural ingredients than our current Eco-cert certification, so we continue to improve our portfolio.

Sirius is working to bring a new range of gentle surfactants to market later this year – that are both eco-friendly and sustainably produced. We take into account the mildness of these cleansing agents to the skin, giving you the ability to make feel-good products that also do good.

These functional ingredients are the basis of many of the products in the market today, but our products’ eco-friendliness gives an added advantage to the environmentally-minded consumer. Want to find out how Sirius’s products can help you expand into your markets?
