The Sirius Effect:

Switching to a biobased product without changing your formulation? This is possible with 100% biobased Ethoxybrite PEG, which is chemically completely identical to petrochemical PEG. It is a simple way to let your product become more sustainable and at the same time less dependent on fluctuating oil prices.

"from black to green PEG"

Less dependent on petroleum

Never before has it been so attractive for producers to switch from petrochemical to organic raw materials. Due to the war in the Ukraine and the economic uncertainties, crude oil prices are fluctuating even more, and that has an effect on everything. Because the availability of organic raw materials is increasing and the price is therefore relatively lower, the price difference with petrochemical raw materials is becoming smaller. Moreover, it’s beter for a company to be less dependent on the petroleum industry.. Naturally, organic raw materials have the great advantage that they fit into the context of sustainability.

100% bio-based

Sirius International's Ethoxybrite PEG (polyethylene glycol) is 100% biobased. It is produced from plant residues after harvesting sugar cane and from inedible molasses, a by-product of the sugar cane industry. This molasses is converted into bioethanol through fermentation, from which PEG is then made. Chemically, there is no difference between this product and PEG made from fossil fuels. By using molasses as a raw material, this product can not only be called biobased, but production is also not at the expense of the food chain. Ethoxybrite PEG has been awarded the ECOCERT quality mark, making it an officially sustainable product.

Countless applications

Sirius offers a wide range of 100% biobased PEG types with molecular weights between 200 and 10.000 Dalton in both liquid and solid form. The application possibilities are countless. Our Ethoxybrite PEG is used in various cleaning and personal care products. Some enzymes, such as the Sirius’s enzymes, are coated with a layer of PEG, which ensures that the enzymes come into action at exactly the right time. It is a very nice idea that both the enzymes and this layer of PEG are of a biological origin.

Recently it has become clear that this is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of all possible applications. PEG can be added as an additive to many products, for example as an emulsifier or anti-foaming agent. In agriculture and horticulture, PEG is used to coat seeds to prevent them from germinating too early and to ensure that the coating is just as plant-based as the seeds. In the paper industry PEG is a raw material for a paper coating that makes the paper stronger. It's nice that coating is just as durable as the paper itself. In the textile industry, there is PEG in the ink, with which prints are printed on clothing. Especially for companies involved in the production of sustainable clothing, it is of course attractive if the raw materials for this ink are 100% organic.
