Cellubrite MCC is a polysaccharide consisting of β(1→4) linked glucose units. MCC has no taste nor odour. It is non-toxic and contains almost exclusively dietary fibre. Cellubrite MCC is readily biodegradable. The crystalline powder is hygroscopic, but insoluble in water; with water it swells to form a gel.

General micro cristalline celluloses are available in the market, these are not optimum for use in tablets. Sirius and its co-producer succeeded to develop 2 types of Cellubrite MCC which take care of tablets dissolving in water within seconds.

Cellubrite MCC comes in various custom made sizes that have different properties. The main applications is as tablet disintegrating agent in pharmacy, food and detergents. In other markets it acts as emulsifier, dispersing agent stabilizer, anti-caking agent. Because of its properties, among which chemical purity and high crystallinity, many more applications start to develop like in sprays, oral suspensions and lotions. Here, it is an alternative to synthetic gels or degradable polymers.

Innovation:

There are common microcrystalline celluloses on the market, but they are not optimal for use in tablets. Sirius and its co-producer have succeeded in developing 2 types of Cellubrite MCC, which do ensure that tablets dissolve in water in seconds.

Technical:

Cellubrite MCC is made from fibrous plant and wood pulp. After treatment of alpha-cellulose with mineral acid and HCl, the amorphous cellulose parts are removed, leaving the crystalline cellulose parts for the purification step.

Commercial:

Packaging: 20-25kg bags, 500, 600, 1000kg big bags, 24mt silo truck (bulk)

Sirius International aims to supply the sustainable raw materials of tomorrow and we take many steps from an idea as a small team to fully developed products. Cellubrite MCC was once one of those ideas and one of the final steps has now been taken. We are proud to say that Sirius' Cellubrite MCC is now Ecocert certified. It is not only an excellent product, it has now also been tested and meets the requirements of a sustainable innovation. Are you curious what Cellubrite MCC can do for your product? The Sirius Effect: Assumptions are an intellectual shortcut, a way to quickly make sense of the world without having to determine if something that was true 99 times before is still true. By being quick and easy, they allow us to get over the initial business of figuring out what or who is before us, and get on with the business of dealing with the whys and hows. But because assumptions are quick and easy, they are also, quite often, wrong. For this newsletter, we are examining our assumptions about microcrystalline cellulose, and the surprising discovery that was made when we tested them.
