British AOS in a highly anionic surfactant. In detergents, these surfactants do the actual cleaning work. Sirius Internationals Britens AOS series are readily biodegradable anionic surfactant chemicals.
AOS tensides have been commercially available in the USA since 1965. They are found in various cleaning products such as toilet cleaners and shampoos. AOS tensides are often substitutes for linear alkylbenzene sulfonates because of their easy biodegradability, foaming, cleaning power and mild properties.
The above AOS products are linear in structure, with carbon chains the size of C12 to C18.
Synonyms: Alpha alkene sulfonate, Sodium alpha alkene sulfonate, Sulfonic acid C12-C14-C16 Alkane hydroxy and C12-C14-C16 Alkene hydroxyl sodium salts.
Technical:
Published information on AOS tensides shows that primary biodegradation of these substances under laboratory conditions can reach 100% in 3 to 5 days. AOS tensides also show extensive biodegradation under strict test conditions of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and its OECD methods (301 B, C, D). Complete biodegradation up to 100% has been demonstrated within 30 days in “closed bottle / BOD” tests. OECD 'Modified Sturm' OECD 301 B shows that AOS is "readily biodegradable".
Several studies have investigated the fate of AOS formulations under real environmental conditions. In a one-year study at a water treatment plant conducted by Sekiguchi, Oba, et al., It was determined that the incoming amount of AOS was about 2%. methylene blue actives (MBAS) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) show that the water, after active sludge treatment, was completely AOS free. The results of this research and the various laboratory studies carried out over the years show that AOS tensides are environmentally friendly.

Two of the biggest buzzwords today are “sustainable” and “biodegradable”. Both are associated with environmental-friendliness, though with a more thorough parsing this is not necessarily the case. Something can be sustainable, in the sense that it can be renewed, but still bad for the environment. Something can be biodegradable, but the individual components can still be toxic. In a perfect world, everything would be sustainable, biodegradable, non-toxic, and carbon-neutral. But function comes first, and trade-offs seem inevitable for now. For example, Sirius’ Briteframe PESA is a phosphate- and nitrate-free dispersant that is biodegradable but not sustainable – yet. But because eutrophication can cause severe problems for the environment and water supply, using PESA is still preferable to using phosphates.
